About

A foundation born of one diagnosis.

Built in 2025 by a teen survivor. Powered by a community that refused to look away. Focused on a mission that won't wait.

Our Mission

A diagnosis arrives without warning. We arrive without delay.

Two crises. One foundation. Both fronts of the fight.

A pediatric brain tumor diagnosis doesn't arrive alone. It comes with travel costs, lost wages, hospital bills insurance won't cover — and a research field that has historically been underfunded compared to adult cancers.

Most charities pick a lane: support today's families or fund tomorrow's science. We refuse to choose. Both fronts are urgent. Both fronts are personal. And both fronts are where every dollar goes.

What We Do

Two pillars, one promise to every family.

— Pillar I

Direct Family Relief

Treatment costs don't pause for paperwork. We provide immediate financial assistance to families in Southwest Florida navigating a pediatric brain tumor diagnosis — covering the gaps insurance won't and the expenses that compound when a child is in care.

— Pillar II

Research That Cures

We channel donor support directly to the research institutions advancing pediatric brain tumor treatment. Less overhead. More science. Every dollar moves the field forward — toward outcomes the next family deserves.

Story
Founder Darren Nieves
How it started

One Naples teen. One refusal to stay silent.

Minds Over Tumors began with one family's fight — and a teenager's refusal to let it stay silent. When founder Darren Nieves's sister Andrea was diagnosed with a central neurocytoma, he watched his family navigate everything that comes with a brain tumor diagnosis: the treatments at Moffitt, the bills insurance wouldn't cover, the emotional weight no one warns you about.

The medicine was hard. But what struck Darren most wasn't the treatment itself. It was watching other families in those same waiting rooms — parents stretched thin by hospital bills, parents who'd driven hours just to get there, parents trying to hold their child's hand and hold their household together at the same time. Andrea's courage became the foundation's beginning.

In 2025, Darren turned that experience into action. The inaugural gala raised over $200,000 in a single night. Today, the foundation works on behalf of every family that hears the words no parent should ever hear.
